4. The Ancient Mounds of Northern Australia

Built by Nasutitermes triodiae, these structures form vast fields of mounds spanning several square kilometers. The mounds feature distinctive spires that can reach heights of five meters, with some showing signs of continuous occupation and maintenance over decades. These mounds exhibit architectural complexity, including advanced ventilation systems that regulate internal temperatures regardless of external fluctuations, which can range from near-freezing to over 40°C.
