Aspiring geishas begin their training at specialized schools around the age of 14 or 15. The first phase, called shikomi, lasts less than a year and lays the groundwork for their future.
During this stage, students focus on mastering essential skills like graceful walking and standing postures, which are key to their elegance. They also practice conversation techniques to engage guests effectively, refining their social abilities.
In addition to performance skills, shikomi students take on domestic tasks, learning the daily responsibilities of a geisha. This training instills discipline, commitment, and respect for tradition. They also learn to wear kimonos properly, mastering the intricate art of dressing that defines their identity.
