5. RBS-70: The Laser-Guided Revolution

The RBS-70 system developed in Sweden presented a novel method for MANPADS direction control. The RBS-70 uses laser beam-riding guidance instead of conventional infrared-guided systems, so it is impervious to conventional infrared countermeasures. This special ability enables the system to run efficiently against targets independent of their heat signature and in all possible weather. The most recent models include sophisticated sighting systems with infrared imaging capacity, therefore facilitating night operations. Although the RBS-70 calls for greater operator training than IR-guided systems, many armed units looking for dependable air defence capabilities choose it because of its accuracy and countermeasures resistance.
