2. Bulava (RSM-56) - Russia's Maritime Guardian

Designed to breach highly developed missile defence systems, the Bulava is Russia's most sophisticated SLBM. Having a range of about 5,000 miles, it can carry up to six MIRV warheads. The sophisticated solid-fuel propulsion mechanism of the missile lowers its launch signature, therefore complicating detection. Its unusual construction permits launches from under arctic ice, therefore giving northern waters strategic flexibility. The extensive countermeasures and decoy systems of the Bulava greatly improve its survival chance against contemporary anti-missile defences.
